Most surfers shrug it off. But that water is doing three things to your ears, and every surf makes it worse.
Gold Coast study · 61 of 85 surfersYou know the feeling. One duck dive and your ear's full. You tilt your head, hop on one foot, shake it, and it's still in there an hour later.
Your mate's talking to you out the back and you're just nodding along. The drive home sounds like you're underwater. And that's the good part.
Because that water isn't clean. It's whatever was in the line-up after the rain, sitting in a warm, dark ear for hours. In coastal Queensland, 4 in 10 infected ears carry the same bacteria that lives in the surf.
So the infection comes. Drops, antibiotics, a week on the beach watching your mates surf. You go back out, the water gets in, and it starts all over again.
This is the bit nobody tells you about. When cold water and wind hit the inside of your ear, your body tries to protect the eardrum. So it grows bone. A thin layer, every cold session. We call it the Bone Wall.
You won't feel a thing, because it doesn't hurt. But it never goes away, and every cold surf stacks another layer on top. Right now 71.8% of Gold Coast surfers have it, and most of them have no idea.
Think about it. The bone narrows the canal, so the next time water gets in, it can't get out. You stay deaf longer. The infections come back faster. And the cold water stuck in there grows even more bone.
Round and round, until a GP looks in and says it's 90% closed. Then it's a surgeon with a drill, A$5,000 an ear and weeks out of the water. And years later, the bone grows back.
Let's put a number on it. A blocked ear canal can take up to 40 decibels off your hearing. That sounds small until you know that every 10 decibels cuts the volume roughly in half. Lose 40, and your mate yelling "outside!" reaches you at about a sixteenth of the volume.
Past 26 decibels, doctors stop calling it water in the ear and start calling it hearing loss. And because the bone never shrinks, every cold surf pushes you further down that scale.
There's only one way to stop all of it: seal the ear, every single session. Bone only grows while the ear is open. The catch is, normal plugs make you deaf, so they end up in the glovebox. ColdWall Plugs are made to stay in:
You walk out of the water hearing. No tilting, no hopping, no muffled drive home.
They're still with you. One gets ripped out, it hangs on the leash.
No ear infections. No drops, no antibiotics, no week on the beach.
No new bone. Your ears stay open, and you keep surfing while your mates book the surgeon.
Put them in before you paddle out. That's the whole change.
Researchers checked. The bone only grew in the hours the ears were open.
“every time I went surfing I was "deaf" after the first dunking - water in the ears. I would stay "deaf" for hours afterwards.”
Surfer · Seabreeze forum“More recently while I was waiting for surgery, I damn near went crazy due to constant infection and deafness.”
Surfer · Seabreeze forum“Have had both ears drilled- was out of the water for 6 weeks both times. Had left ear done at age 17 and now(age 37) is almost completely grown back !”
Surfer · Swellnet forum“Haven't had a single ear infection since I got them, whereas before the plugs I was on antibiotics and swaying around like a well-lubricated sailor every couple of months.”
Surfer · Swellnet forum“But it is great not to have to take earplugs out to talk to folks - a game changer.”
