Why Alphes
Why Alphes
There's no shortage of outdoor gear in Australia. There's a shortage of shops willing to choose.
Under twenty products
On purpose, and it's the hardest part of running this. Every product we add has to be better than the silence it replaces.
Search for a head torch and you'll find eleven that are the same torch with different branding, and no way to tell which one to buy. That isn't choice — it's a shop refusing to do its job. We pick one, put it up, and carry the pick. The catalogue is the opinion.
The pages are written to be read
Not scanned. Plain sentences, in order, by someone who has had the thing in their hands.
We say “assembled” when it's assembled. We don't say “military grade”, because that means nothing. Where we don't know something — a real-world runtime, how it holds up after two summers — we leave it out rather than fill the gap with adjectives. A short honest page is worth more than a long confident one.
Chosen for Australian ground
Four questions, every time:
- Does salt kill it?
- What happens after a day in a parked car in February?
- Can you work it one-handed, in the dark, annoyed?
- Will you still bother packing it on the fourth trip?
Plenty of good gear fails the fourth-trip question. That's the one that matters most.
And what we're not: alpine, snow, technical climbing, expedition. If you need a rope or crampons you're in the wrong shop, and we'd rather say so than sell you something adjacent.
Prices, plainly
Every price is in Australian dollars with GST included, and it's the only price that item has ever had. No compare-at theatre. No countdown.
Standard shipping is free and arrives in 3 to 8 business days. Express is $4.99 and jumps the dispatch queue — your order is packed and sent ahead of standard orders.
One person answers the email
Not a queue, not a bot with a first name. Write to help@bealphes.com and you'll get someone who can actually open your order. If something turns up wrong, we fix it — the refund policy has the specifics, in the same plain language.
