Alphes Decoy Telescopic Camp Light
Stand it six metres out and the moths go with it. Turn it warm and it lights dinner instead of the sky.

The lamp over the table is what brings them in.
Moths and beetles steer by the brightest light in view. Hang it over the table and the target is built, so the swarm is in the food within minutes of dark.
Zappers and citronella can't out-shine a lamp, and yellow cellophane only dims it. The fix is to move the bright point away from the plates.
"Whatever poisons you want to use, you're not going to stop vast quantities of bugs coming to a constant source of light."

Two lights, six metres apart. The moths go to the far one.
Old bush campers have done this for years with a fluoro on a stick. The Decoy Light is built for it: tall and cold white for the decoy job, low and warm for the table job.
Six metres out, pole up, cold white.
Stand it over bare ground about six metres from the table, at full brightness, head tilted away from the chairs. It becomes the brightest thing in view, and nobody is sitting under it.
Low on the table, warm, facing down.
Use the light already in the car, or a second Decoy Light set to warm with the head turned flat at the plates. It lights faces and food and throws almost nothing into the air.
Nothing gets sprayed and nothing gets killed. The swarm goes where it always goes, to the brightest point, and the brightest point is now over bare dirt.
Old campers worked this out years ago.
"A good ol Flouro 15m or so away is as good an insect magnet as you can get. I carry one for this purpose."

"We put a reasonable spot light up in a tree away from seating area but illuminating it - you can then read in peace while the bugs go ballistic around the light"

Australian campers have described this same trick more than 30 times on forums and in YouTube comments since 2004. These are their words, not reviews of this light.
Everything else fights the moths. This moves them.

The dash means partly: yellow light pulls fewer moths but still draws them while it is the brightest light around, and it gives up half the light doing it.

A $22.95 Halo Head Torch, on us.
The decoy stays out on the dirt holding the swarm. The table light stays low on the plates. So the walk to the tent, the loo run at midnight and the nappy change in the dark get their own light, on your head, hands free.
Switch the Halo to yellow and, with the decoy out-shining it, the moths stay on the decoy instead of your face. Wave a hand in front of it and it turns on or off, no fumbling for the button with greasy fingers.

Two lights. Six metres apart.
Dinner without the moths.
Summer is about twelve usable weekends, and the moths are worst on exactly the warm, still nights that make everyone want to eat outside.
