Most heads on a camping trip end up on one of three things, and all three give out around the second night.

The jumper. Rolled tight at nine o'clock, a flat wad of wool by midnight, and the shoulder ends up doing the pillow's job.

The air pillow. Packs down to the size of a fist, then spends the night as a balloon under the ear. It crinkles with every turn, it is too firm until some air comes out and too soft after, and a valve that isn't sealed perfectly means it is flat by morning.

The Driftoff is one solid piece of foam

A core of slow-rebound memory foam set at 10cm of support. It takes the shape of the head lying on it and holds that shape, and when the head lifts, it comes back. The core is perforated so air moves through it instead of the heat building up under the cheek. No valve, no stuff sack, no loose fill to chase back into the middle.

Two swags side by side at a free camp. At 2am one of them has a torch on and a valve between the teeth, blowing air back into a pillow that went soft an hour ago. In the other swag, the head on the Driftoff hasn't moved since ten.

The cover is a soft, low-rustle fabric, so rolling over doesn't wake whoever is sharing the tent. It unzips down the side and comes off, which matters after a few nights of red dust, sweat and sunscreen.

It does not roll down to fist size. It is a flat rectangle with rounded corners, made to ride in the swag, the rooftop tent, the camper or the boot. If every gram goes on your back, take an air pillow. If the car is coming, bring the real one.

Which colour
