One disc on the awning, and the head torch stops blinding the table.

Nine o'clock, two campsites side by side. At the first, a head torch hangs off the gazebo leg on full white, and everyone in the circle is talking with a hand up against the glare. At the second, a line of warm light runs the length of the awning, above head height. The faces are lit, the cards are readable, nobody is squinting, and whoever walks back from the amenities block slows down going past.

The second site is running one 120mm disc.

Putting it up

Pull the string out of the disc and run it along the awning, a guy rope or the pergola beam, up to ten metres. Switch it on. No power point, no extension lead, no bag of cable to untangle first.

Set the string to warm white and dim it down: that is the soft light at the second site. Multicolour is there for when the kids get hold of the switch. With the string wound in, the disc works as a lantern on its own, with a white SMD2835 light for the tent or the table.

Packing it down

The string retracts back into the body. Next morning you are holding a 120mm disc again, with nothing to coil, knot or stuff into a bag. If rain comes through overnight, leave it strung up: the body is IP65-rated ABS.

Charging

It tops up from its own solar panel through the day, or from Type-C in about three hours. The lithium cell is built in, so there are no batteries to buy.

Two discs give you twenty metres of string: one along the awning, one across the tent or the kitchen end, so no light gets carried from one end of camp to the other. The 2-Pack is A$78.95, which makes the second disc A$26 on top of the A$52.95 single. The 4-Pack (A$144.95) suits a long pergola run or a group camp with a few tents.
