Greasy hands never have to find the button again.

Dusk on the side of the highway, bonnet up. Socket wrench in one hand, rag in the other. Every time he looks up, his head torch hits the driver who stopped to help square in the eyes, so he reaches up with a greasy thumb to switch it off, then on, then off. By the third time the lens wears a black print and the wrench is on the ground.

With a Halo on his head, none of that happens. He arms the sensor while his hands are still clean: one press of the sensor button and the indicator turns from red to green. From then on it answers to a hand passed within about 13cm of the front. Wave: on. Wave: off. The wrench stays on the bolt, the rag stays in the other hand, and the lens stays clean.

The light comes from a COB strip across the front, so the whole engine bay or the whole cupboard under the sink is lit, belt and radiator cap at once, not one coin-sized spot. A centre spot LED reaches further out. Rated at 450 lumens with a throw of around 100 metres, three levels on the power button.

What gets said about sensor head torches, answered

"It switches itself off every time something moves." Only once you have armed it, and only for a hand within about 13cm of the front. With the indicator on red, the sensor ignores everything: walking, nodding, a mate waving across the campfire to be funny. Arm it when your hands are about to get dirty. Disarm it when the job is done.

"Mine sat in a drawer all winter and the batteries corroded." There are no AAAs in this one to corrode. A built-in 3.7V lithium cell charges on USB-C, rated 10W, off the same cable as a modern phone.

"Head torches get heavy by the end of the job." About 100g of soft ABS on an adjustable elastic band. Rain is fine too: it is rated IPX4. Dunking is not.

The one to pick
