Open the drawer, read the number, and the blackout is handled.
Twenty to nine on a winter night and the whole street goes dark. In one house, someone is in the laundry pressing the switch on a torch that was last used at Easter. Nothing. The batteries went flat sitting in the drawer, and the spare pack is somewhere in the dark too.
Next door, someone opens the same kind of drawer, picks up a Ranger and reads the charge on the side before switching it on. The beam is on the fuse box inside a minute.
Same blackout, same street. One torch told its owner it was ready months before the night it was needed.
A number on the side
A torch that lives in a drawer drains with the switch off, and the old batteries leak. You find out at the worst moment. The full-size Rangers run on a built-in rechargeable 18650 lithium cell and show the charge on a digital readout beside the switch. Open the drawer, glance at it, close the drawer. If it is low, it goes on a USB-C cable, the same plug as a modern phone, and it is topped up before the next storm.
No batteries to buy. No battery cap to wrestle off. Nothing to remember except a glance.
Wide for the room, tight for the yard
Slide the head and the beam changes. Spread out, it washes the whole kitchen so everyone can find the candles. Pulled in tight, it throws a hard circle down the yard to the side gate or onto a house number from the footpath. One torch, the whole range, no swapping.
About 78g with the cell inside and around 15.5cm long, with textured grip panels down the barrel so it stays put in a wet hand.
Which one to get
Get the Wide-Head Zoom Torch, A$25.95. It carries the largest charge display of the four and throws the broadest flood, and those are the two things a house torch is for: reading it at a glance and lighting a whole room when the power is out.
The Slimline (A$19.95) is the easiest full-size model to hold one-handed, made for a glovebox. The Tactical (A$22.95) has a zoom collar marked through the focus range. The Mini Pocket Torch (A$15.95) is 9.2cm with a pen clip and a COB side strip, and has no charge display.
If it ever fails, email a photo and your order number and it is replaced or refunded at no cost.
